Stage fright is the villain: 5 ways to help your child beat it

Stage fright is the villain

Your child memorises the speech perfectly at home… and then forgets everything the moment they see the teacher’s face. Sound familiar? That is stage fright — and it is completely normal. The good news: it can be trained.

1. Name the feeling

Tell your child that a racing heart and shaky hands are the body getting ready to perform. Nerves are energy, not a sign of failure.

2. Breathe low and slow

Breathe in for four counts and out for six, three times. A long out-breath calms the body within a minute.

3. Practise the first line

A strong opening carries the rest. Let your child say the first sentence out loud until it feels easy.

4. Speak to friendly faces

Instead of “the whole audience”, pick three friendly faces — left, centre and right — and talk to them one at a time.

5. Practise in front of real people

Mirrors help, but real listeners help more. Family dinners, small groups and outdoor events build the habit of speaking under real conditions.

At BraveTalk we teach these moves step by step — online first, then in front of real audiences. Students move from fear of the stage, weak fluency and shyness to being confident, brave and fluent.
